I heard a song the other day that made me laugh:
"I went to school with 27 Jennifers
16 Jenns, 10 Jennies, and then there was her."
We definitely picked Ellie's name partly because it was not on the list of popular names given by the Social Security website. As a fellow Jennifer, who is married to a Michael, we went out of our way to not do that to our little one.
I guess the down-side of the decision is that it cuts down on the chances of her having a song written for her.

So this got me to thinking: if "Jim" or "Bob" are commonplace names, what about Jim-Bob? Is it twice as banal, or half as boring? Is the deep south really a hotbed of imaginative personal names, or just the dry sucking sound at the bottom of imagination's well?
Do you think Jim Bob has a lot of friends because his name is easy to remember?
There is a little girl in Ellie's new class that keeps saying "Mia, Mia" to her Mom. Mia is another girl in the class and she is just so excited to see Mia again. It made me realize that it will be a while before Ellie has a best friend like that. The teachers refer to her by her full name, and what young toddler is going to be able to pronounce that??? It may be a couple years before another child verbally requests Ellie's company.
