Your son is adorable!

Just when I think that Ellie is starting to get cute curly, girly hair... I get a great compliment from a coworker: "I saw the picture of your son on your computer and he's adorable!"

She was referring to the one of Ellie standing next to Merlin (the puppy) in her jeans and her shirt that says "Cuter than most." It's one of my favorite pictures but I *NEVER* thought she looked like a boy in it! Mothers can be so blind sometimes, can't we?

I suspect that none of my four sons will remember the fact that they were all, more than once, confused for girls. My boys were all graced with rather long and thick eye lashes. Apparently this is big factor in the confusion.

I think a lot of people (myself included) really can't tell the gender of very young kids, so they look for hints that signal gender. For example, long eyelashes or blue jeans.

When it happened, I usually just said something like, "You know, if I didn't know better, I'd probably not be able to tell either, but he is a boy." Which usually created profuse apologies, but that I blew off by simply saying, "Are you kidding? Don't worry about it. It happens to me w/other people's kids all the time."

omg! Ellie has such a feminine-looking face, I cannot imagine how anyone would mistake her for a boy. They must be extremely unobservant.

It happens all the time and I'm sure that I'm guilty of doing it as well. Babies often look the same and it's so hard to tell the difference at times, especially if they're not wearing pink or blue. I think that people make the mistake more with girls because of what mjh said... if a girl is wearing jeans or blue, then she looks like a boy. And that happens more often than a little boy wearing pink.

But I also agree with Spleeness. In many of the times that people mistaken Ellie as a boy, I wonder how come they don't take note of the pink flowers on her jeans or the fact that the blue shirt has cute little hearts on it. Sure, if the clothes are completely neutral then I can understand, but it's too bad when people don't take the split second to notice things like that.
