Ugh... We've had better days

So Thursday Michael took the day off to take care of Ellie, who still wasn't feeling well. He ended up taking her to the doctor, who ended up sending us to the hospital because her oxygen levels were low. It turns out she has a bad virus and two ear infections. We spent the night at the hospital for observation to see if her oxygen levels would increase. Not fun.

Before this happened, she was such a social butterfly, but by the end of the day she had been prodded and touched by 9 different physicians/nurses/med students. It got to the point where whenever a stranger came into the room, she'd just start crying. Oh man, I hope that's just a temporary thing.

I was hoping to come out of the experience being thankful for those in the medical field for helping make my precious little one feel better, but I'm not sure that happened. I think overall the nurses were great, it was just everyone else. And the whole repetition of everything. That, and the trash man came into the room and shook a bag really loud at 10:30 PM. UH? Hello? Is it EVER a good idea to change the trash that late at night in the pediatric ward????

Anyway, it was a long long day and we were sent home with instructions to keep her on oxygen while she sleeps. That's easier said than done.

I think we may have our parenting licenses taken away. I accidentally gave her the grown-up size nose piece for the tubing to the oxygen, which is easily 4 times larger than the baby one. Poor thing, her nose was in so much pain by the end of the night (during which we had to constantly force her to keep the thing in her nose). Then this morning, we gave her the wrong dose for her medication. Ugh. We feel like we're new parents again.

Today she slept a lot. She no longer has a temperature, so that's a step in the right direction. She feels so cold to the touch, which is weird after getting so used to her being so hot. But she's sleeping. A lot. And then more.

Hopefully that's good, and hopefully tomorrow will be better. I'd love to get some cute Easter pictures out of this little thing, but we'll see how she's feeling.

I want this to be over with now. I don't think I'm cut out to be the mother of a sick baby*. It's heartbreaking. It's so sad to see her so tired and not feeling good, yet she tries to play with you from a lying position. Cute, but sad. I wish I could make it better.

* Disclaimer - I consider myself incredibly lucky to not have worse problems with little Ellie. In the end, a trip to the hospital for oxygen really isn't that big of a deal, and I certainly know of a few people who had worse Fridays than we did. H, I'm so glad that you and O are going to be ok, and I hope that your neighbors are doing well too! We love you!

My gosh, that must have been extremely worrisome. Poor little Ellie, being poked and prodded. It's awful to feel so helpless in the face of her not feeling well. Hope she gets better soon.

The helplessness was definitely one of my least favorite feelings ever. She always looks to her daddy, and especially her mommy to make things better, and this was no different. Only this time we could only rub her back and try to help her sleep. Let's just say I'm so glad that we have a healthy baby. We're very lucky.
